How to Get to Lookout Inn Lodge in the Costa Rican Rainforest
Getting to Costa Rica is easy! Our Juan Santamaria International Airport, located near our capital city, San José, is Costa Rica’s largest international airport and has many non-stop flights arriving and departing daily.
Once you arrive in San José, you have multiple transportation options. How you get to our remote beach and jungle eco lodge entirely on your available time, your sense of adventure and the amount of money you wish to spend.
The following options should help you decide which form of transport is best for you.
There are two airline companies that service Puerto Jimenez on a daily basis with a flight time of approximately 1 hour. Note: with all flights, advanced reservations are definitely recommended.
- From San José International Airport (SJO) to Puerto Jimenez (PJM) – SANSA AIRLINES
- From San José Pavas Airport (SYQ) to Puerto Jimenez (PJM) – NATURE AIR
If you find yourself in Puerto Jimenez and would like a quick 10-minute flight to the secluded Lookout Inn Lodge in the Costa Rica rainforest, you have one option: Alfa Romeo Air Taxi

Private 4WD Taxi
Private Taxi is $70.00 one-way (for whole taxi, not pp). These are 4x4D pickup trucks with tarps & padded seats in the back.
The colectivo is about $9.00pp, leaves in front of bus station twice a day 6am & 1:30pm, everyday including Sundays.
Rent a car and drive to Puerto Jimenez and then on to Carate. Outside of Puerto Jimenez, there are too many rent-a-car places to mention, but in Puerto Jimenez, we can recommend Solid Car Rental or Toyota Rent a Car. Note: Do not rent a 4WD drive car - you need a 4WD truck or SUV – If you don’t, you’ll regret it!
- Driving to Puerto Jimenez: There are two main roads, the first being the Costanera (coast road) and the second is 'Route 2,' which winds its way through the central valley and passes through the mountains that surround it. Both roads meet up in Palmar Norte at Route 2; from here go south to Chacarita, where there is a gas station. Turn right and you are on the "Peninsula de Osa" – follow this until you come to Puerto Jimenez and stop for a much needed rest. The entire ride from San José should take you approximately 8 hours.
- Driving from Puerto Jimenez to the Lookout Inn: Once in Puerto Jimenez, you can get to Lookout Inn Lodge in Carate by continuing south to the gas station and turning right. Follow the road for 1 hour 45 minutes and you’ll come to a beautiful stretch of road with the ocean on your left fronted by beautiful almond trees, and the rainforest jungle on the right. From here you will find local signs advising you to that you’re getting close to our beach and rainforest eco lodge. Keep your eyes open for the immaculately landscaped gardens. The Inn sits on the side of the hill and all who pass by wonder how it ever got built!
