Here at the Lookout Inn we are working hard on new additions such as the soon to be 'Frog House' and the new pool deck. Although the maintenance is important, there is another project with great significance here; the Turtle Project! Since the Lookout Inn is perched with an ocean view, it is hard not to be apart of the intense turtle war that happens every year.
A wide range of turtles nest here at Carate Beach. They come with the blanket of night and search for a nice place to lay their eggs. A variety of sea turtles can be seen here, from the Olive Ridley to the Leatherback. From the Hawksbill to the East Pacific Green Turtle, they can be spotted here. There is however a daunting element to this story, the beautiful nest are being poached at night. With the Osa Peninsula now more accessible than ever, the poachers come in the night and track the new nest only to take all the eggs. It is a sad and sickening thing. Why would anyone do such a horrible thing. The sea turtles need our help. That is why The Lookout Inn has made it a priority to help the sea turtles.
We have combined our efforts with the volunteers of the Osa Conservation Program. Often there are turtle volunteers who stay here at the Lookout Inn. The volunteers often do a night walk to check for new nests, tagging the turtles as they come across them. Our very own Jeff then goes in the mornings at 5:30am to cover any new nest, thus hopefully protecting them from animals(dogs) and future poaching. It is never ending battle and the best way to fight is to continue educating people about the issue in hopes that one day it will stop.  -A nice morning for a turtle walk!
