Staying here at the Lookout Inn are three girls who have been volunteering with the turtle program. They have been going out twice a day checking on the nesting turtles. They usually do a night walk between 8 and 3 am and a morning walk around 5:30am. They are checking how many turtles are nesting, how far each nest is away from the ocean and tree line, and to see if other nests have been poached. It is a real problem here on Carate beach because the road follows the beach so it is very easy for poachers to come in the middle of the night and quickly run out and snatch the eggs.
Terry, Katya and Jeff have been working hard to help track the nests and protect them as best they can. This morning Josh and I walked out to the lagoon with Jeff and Patrick(a turtle volunteer too) to check on the new nests, however the tide had come so far up that all tracks had been covered up. We are hopeful that there are new nests hidden beneath the sand :-)
When the volunteer girls are not walking the beach, they find joy in other things.They hiked through a little of Corcovado National Park to see the waterfall, they have watched the white faced monkey right off the deck of the Lookout Inn, and they like playing in the surf. They came up with a "fun" game to play in the ocean where you stand facing the breaking waves and brace yourself for impact hoping that you wont get crushed.... It was a very sandy game indeed... After playing for quite some time I decided that the only real consistent outcome were legs flying everywhere. It was a blast to say the least no matter how many times I got crushed :-)
